USC Columbia

I’ve been traveling all week and am now in Columbia SC. Today I’ll meet with Beverly Dominick, the placement coordinator for the University of South Carolina  School of Journalism and Mass Communications. USC has both a print journalism and electronic journalism program, a new visual communications  major, an advertising major and a Masters in Mass Communication.

Yesterday I toured the Ifra Newsplex and talked with Director Randy Covington. I sat in on a training session for hospital public relations executives who evaluated various Web sites and learned how to market themselves through multimedia and the latest technologies. It was similar to many of the issues facing newspapers. Ifra also trains newspaper publishers, editors and reporters, as well as offering an AdPlex advertising training program.  I’ll be talking extensively about my visit – and my dinner with Doug Fisher, J-school professor and co-author of Principles of Convergent Journalism – when I get back.

You have gathered a lot of information to share, but I am, unfortunately, not one of your students. What guidance do you have for seeking a summer internship between soph and jr year? Thanks for any advice.

    Jaine,

I’m really not the expert on that. What you may want to do is reach out to the editors of the nearby community newspapers and just ask their advice? Even if they do not have an internship to offer I bet they know some who may – or have tips on sites to research. You might also consider posting a Situations Wanted ad with Editor & Publisher, MediaBistro, etc. I don’t know the price for that and it may be prohibitive. I’d also do a search on WordPress and Technorati for blogs by journalists and ask their advice.
